Movement of 1968

The Movimento del Sessantotto (the 1968 Italian students protests) happened already 50 years ago. Considering its mass dimensions, its intellectual depth and its inherent complexity in its relations to that time’s Italian society, the Sessantotto movement still stands as an important reference event in contemporary society change’s analysis. It significantly contributed to change Italian society’s face in its political and ideological asset as well as in its cultural display. For the deep influence it has had on political science, sociology, history and even cinema, the Movimento still deserves an in-depth analysis and discussion activity.

As a group based in Bologna, a cradle to Italian resistance and political thought, WUXU has built up a team of young researchers from many disciplinary fields to practice a multi-layer and intercommunicative cultural activity about different Italian cultural and humanistic features.

The Movimento del Sessantotto is among these: choosing the Sessantotto as an object of research, besides enabling us to get in touch with Italian direct sources and their historical value and conducting an on the spot research activity, aims to build up the nucleus of a larger participative gathering focused on new readings of the Sessantotto movement.

Antonio Negri is an important Italian scholar who emerged in the Sixties. He later founded the political group Potere Operaio living a voice to the post-1968 working class. It was followed by Autonomia Operaia, a group aimed to deepen the strategic theory and practice of resistance workers movements.

Fifty years after, did the movimento already lose momentum? Let us quote these words by Guattari and Negri as an answer:

“Singularity, autonomy and freedom are the three banners which gather every struggle against the capitalist and/or socialist orders; since this moment this alliance invents new forms of freedom: in the emancipation of work and in the work of emancipation”.

This discussion will be combined with other sessions of WUXU as lectures, seminaries, cine-forum and publications.
